Our Workshop Presenters

Michael King and Malcolm Muirhead create an energy and enthusiasm for the principle and goals of Pilates that will engage you and stimulate your own passions and creativity to enhance your own practice and teaching.

Michael King

Michael King’s path with Pilates began over 40 years ago as a young dancer and he was quickly teaching it and then shortly after running his own equipment studio in London. His world was expanded from his strong foundations with his original teacher Alan Herdman, when he was given the opportunity by Houston Ballet to run their Adult Programming in Pilates and general health for the company and the public. It is here that he was given the chance to experience the work of many of the original students of Joseph Pilates and saw the wonderful variety of interpretations that already existed that had grown from the experiences of those original students and clients of Joseph Pilates. With a passion for teaching and having fun doing it he has worked continuously to help move the Pilates community forward and to gain recognition of the Pilates Method as a respected profession and Method outside of the Pilates World and to bring unity and standards of education within the Pilates world.

Malcolm Muirhead

Malcolm Muirhead has been teaching Pilates for 20 years but he found himself working with adult education from his early 20’s and eventually was working in The City of London when first introduced to Pilates by Michael King in 1999. A passionate educator and detail freak he fell in love with the Method of Pilates and those people both practicing and teaching Pilates. Very quickly he was inspired by the feedback and rewards experienced by both clients and the teachers that Michael was training to make a career change himself into the Health and Fitness world and together with Michael formed a comprehensive teacher training programme. A natural developer and driving force for quality, in 2002 he helped facilitate the process that meant their course was adopted by the accreditation body Oxford Cambridge RSA (OCR) as their National standard for the Pilates Technique in 2002 (OCR Level 2-Pilates Based Matwork). This was significant in that it was the first nationally accredited examination worldwide. Along with Michael he continues to try to drive the journey towards standards of education and teacher training accountability to help the public become more educated about the method and all it offers. Along the way he has developed his own teaching style of intensity with contrasting fun as he is a great believer that you learn best with laughter and desire to be the best you can be.

Sunday December 1st 2019 – 9am to 5pm

Saturday

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 30th 2019

9.00- 10.00 – Rhythmic Pilates (Class)
Michael brings you a new class for 2019 with a fresh approach to Pilates Matwork that is a development of the traditional Pilates Method. There are many styles of Pilates Matwork, with some using the original dynamic flow of each movement, often using the instructors voice or finger snapping as the directive lead for the pace. Here Michael uses unique music to help you follow the rhythm of the class. This class is for experienced Pilates practitioners who know the movements and are also able to make personal modifications, as needed, for each movement. But as we motivate our students to move and stay healthy this style of class brings in a new challenge to take their skills and efforts to a new level.

10.15-12.30 – Magic Circle (Isotoner) (Workshop)
The Magic Circle is one of the original pieces of small equipment designed and used by Joseph Pilates in his studio. It was then a very heavy tool but today we have different options to work with a lighter versions. As with all the props within the Pilates method, it can challenge or help the each of the movements. This workshop will explore not only the traditional repertoire but creative ways of making the programmes fun and challenging

12.30-13.30 –  Lunch

13.30-15.45 – AXIS+Pilates (Workshop)
This is a unique chance to open your approach with the acquisition of a new motor approach to reach psycho-physical balance and wellness. We look at uneven posture, scoliosis. It’s a technique aimed at the realignment and the articular and muscular balance using a powerful thoracic-diaphragmatic action and supporting bases in counter resistance.

The fusion between the two techniques allows to focus on the releasing of the “miotenoni” or muscle-tendon chains, in other words the set of muscles, blood vessels and nerves that transmit painful sensations even very far from their point of origin.

The correct identification of the point of origin and destination of the pain allows the teacher to use specific exercises of Axis+Pilates for the achievement of the psycho-physical wellness.
The exercises presented will focus on:

  • muscle-neural balance
  • release of the vertebral hinges and blocking points of the vertebral column
  • increase of the skeletal muscle strength and resistance
  • balance and functional overload prevention

Axis+Pilates workshop gives everybody the chance to have a great and precious baggage of technical notions and range of innovative exercises to face the multiple psycho-physical individual’s problems in a concrete and efficient way.

16.00-17.00 – Infinity Barre (Class)
MK Barre Programme brings you the elements of dance and also the use our Pilates Method in an upright position using fun and motivating music. This we also do with our Standing Pilates Programmes but in this class Michael also brings in his fitness background to give you a dynamic and fun workout. A great workout for the end of the day

Sunday

SUNDAY DECEMBER 1st 2019

9.00- 10.00 – Foundation Class (Workshop)
Join Malcolm for this simple, focussed yet challenging class working with the foundations of the Pilates method – the PRINCIPLES. Controlled, deliberate movements working to your breath pattern. Malcolm is known for his passion for detail and we invite you to remove your instructors hat for an hour and remind yourself about the small but important lessons learned with this level of class.

10.15-12.30 – Sparc Workshop (Workshop)
Join Malcolm as he brings you his worksop using the SPARC balance tool. This light and portable piece of equipment can be used as a balance tool in Pilates standing work as well as in your Matwork Pilates repertoire movements. Malcolm will show you how the soft spikes on the curve work to release the fascial tension in your body from feet upwards. It can be used for personal training or in a group class and Michael takes over and ends the workshop with music as he shows you his version of STOMP MK style.

12.30-13.30 Lunch

13.30-15.45 – RELEASE (Fascia in Movement) (Workshop)
Michael looks at movements that challenge our myofascial system that we can bring into our sessions to help our clients improve their technique in everything else they do. What is the myofascial system? Superficial fascia is a soft connective tissue that is located just below the skin. Fascia also wraps and connects the muscles, bones, nerves, and blood vessels of the body. Together, muscle and fascia make up what is called the myofascial system.

With our new understanding of this system and how it plays a huge part in our movement quality there is a quiet revolution taking place in many industries. For various reasons, including disuse, a lack of stretching, or injury issues, the fascia and the underlying muscle tissue can become stuck together. This is called ‘adhesion’ and it results in restricted muscle movement along with pain, soreness, and reduced flexibility or range of motion. Share with Michael how simple movements can have a profound positive impact on a client’s wellbeing.

16.00-17.00 – Respira (Class)
Michael is known for his creative flow sessions where he explores both Pilates mat based and Pilates Equipment movement combinations together with unique music that blends the movements into flowing combinations. This year Michael will bring his new session with new choreography and new music. Come try and explore movements – a fun way to end the weekend event.
