The National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies, and Personal Training Upgrade options contain everything you need to gain an internationally recognised EQF Level 4 qualification.

Options

RESISTANCE TRAINING WORKSHOP
A one day workshop is for those who already hold a fitness instructor qualification which includes Resistance Training but who feel that they need to refresh their knowledge in this area in order to prepare for examination. You can also opt for assessment only if you feel that your resistance training knowledge and skills are adequate.

GROUP FITNESS WORKSHOP
A one day workshop is for those who already hold a fitness instructor qualification which includes Group Fitness but who feel that they need to refresh their knowledge in this area in order to prepare for examination. You can also opt for assessment only if you feel that your group fitness knowledge and skills are adequate.

There is also a full Group Fitness module for those who already hold a  fitness instructor qualification which does not include group fitness. This module is completed over fifteen weeks and is available as a morning, afternoon or evening option depending on the time of year. The tutorials for this module are delivered once each week for the full duration and you will sit a practical assessment at the end of the module.

COMPLETE COURSE
If you already hold a fitness instructor qualification but have not worked in the fitness profession for a number of years, you may feel that a fuller learning experience is required to bring your knowledge and teaching confidence up to date or if you hold a qualification which is not recognised in Ireland, you may be able to complete any of our full primary fitness instructor / personal trainer programmes at a reduced price of two thirds of the standard fee.

ASSESSMENT ONLY
You can avail of this option if you hold an existing qualification, feel that you have all the knowledge and skills required and just want to be assessed in order to upgrade to the National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training.

Eligibility

If you hold a fitness instructor qualification, obtained either in Ireland or abroad, but it does not meet the eligibility requirements for CPD programmes or registration with REPs Ireland you can upgrade to the National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training at EQF Level 4.

Being qualified at EQF Level 4 allows you to register with REPs Ireland (www.repsireland.ie) at the highest level, and once registered you will have international portability to countries such as Australia, USA, Canada, UK, New Zealand, etc.

There are a range of modules available which have been tailored to offer upgrade options for a variety of backgrounds. Some will need to complete several modules while others have the option of electing for assessment only via both practical and theory exams.

Instructors who graduated with NCEHS (National Training Centre) before 2006 can apply to upgrade their qualification to EQF Level 4,  Advanced Fitness Instructor / Personal Trainer Level. This upgrade route is also open to all qualified instructors including those with the following qualifications:

  • National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training (Pre-2006)
  • National Certificate in Exercise & Fitness (NCEF)
  • ITEC Gym Instruction and / or Aerobic Instructor*
  • EQF Level 3 Fitness Instructor

Many other qualifictions – please call if you are unsure of your individual eligibility.

Instructors who didn’t qualify through NCEHS / NTC must submit a copy of their original fitness instructor qualification with their application form.

*ITEC relates to International Therapy Examination Council qualifications offered by various training providers and awarded by the UK based organisation and not the qualification offered by the Irish Training and Educational Centre which does not meet the eligibility requirements.

Schedule and Location

Various workshops and modules are available part-time as morning and evening options, in Dublin at the National Training Centre and in Cork at The Mardyke Arena, UCC.

Dates for workshops are set when there is sufficient demand. Full modules and assessments are available at various times throughout the year.

Only fully qualified tutors deliver National Training Centre health fitness modules, with each tutor having recognised industry and educational experience in their individual fields.

John Sharkey, MSc.

John Sharkey is an international educator, author and authority in the areas of Clinical Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, human movement and the manual treatment of chronic pain using European Neuromuscular Therapy. John is a graduate of the University of Dundee, University of Liverpool and University of Chester. He completed undergraduate and post-graduate studies in the areas of Exercise Physiology, Clinical Anatomy and holds a post-graduate certificate in education. He is currently a senior lecturer within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Life Sciences, University of Chester/NTC, Dublin and is the programme leader of the Biotensegrity focused Thiel soft fix cadaver dissection courses department of anatomy and human identification, Dundee University, Scotland.

John has been delivering human anatomy dissection courses for many years teaching the geometry of anatomy and movement from the unique Biotensegrity-Anatomy for the 21st Century perspective. His presentations are respectful, dynamic, entertaining, educational and insightful.

John promotes his model of “Biotensegrity-Anatomy for the 21st century” integrating the pioneering work of his mentor Dr. Stephen Levin MD. John has been teaching European Neuromuscular Therapy using living anatomy and specialising in chronic pain conditions. He is recognised as one of the worlds leading authorities on fascia and Biotensegrity. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies (JBMT), International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine and other professional journals.

Noeleen Gregory, MSc

Noeleen Gregory is expert in a variety of modules on various NTC courses including:

Her knowledge and wisdom is impeccable and is backed up by a life dedicated to exercise and nutrition – both personally and professionally. Her enthusiasm and passion for fitness has influenced thousands of students to pursue a career in the health fitness industry.

Noeleen is also the National Training Centre’s examinations coordinator and is a highly respected member of the tutoring team for the Dundalk Institute of Technology’s B.Sc (Hons) in Health and Physical Activity.

Michelle O’Melia, MSc

Michelle has been delivering educational excellence at the National Training Centre since 2000. She is passionate about all aspects of fitness and health and holds a Masters Degree in Exercise and Nutrition Science from the University of Chester.

Michelle teaches exercise to music, anatomy and physiology, fitness assessment and exercise physiology on our primary health fitness programmes and also delivers suspension training and indoor cycling.

Janette Penney, MSc

Janette is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin where she studied Economics, and continued on to spend almost 10 years in business and technology and management roles in the UK and Ireland.

In 2003, she changed career path and moved into the world of fitness. Janette has always been passionate about fitness and getting fit and knew she wanted to inspire and educate others.

She ran a successful gym in Dublin for six years while she developed her industry specific skills at the National Training Centre. As a qualified Personal Trainer and Pilates Instructor, she has taught private group exercise classes, and focused on motivating others through 1-1 personal training.

Janette teaches the Anatomy, Exercise to Music and Business modules on the Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training course and also teaches on the Advanced Diploma in Pilates Matwork.

Danielle Iannelli

Daniel is a resistance training tutor for the NTC and has a background in Martial Arts. He also trains and competes in Brazilian jiu jitsu,

Daniel holds a Higher National Diploma in Sports and Leisure Management, Sports Recreation Level 5 and is currently studying for his degree in Strength and Conditioning.

Daniel also teaches on NTC’s Kettlebell Training, Suspension Training and Strength and Conditioning programmes.

Larry Geraghty

Larry, who like all NTC tutors holds the National University of Ireland’s Diploma in Training and Continuing Education teaches primarily resistance training on our fitness programmes and also heads up the strength and conditioning course.

Larry is also a tutor on the National Qualification in Neuromuscular Physical therapy and runs his own successful private practice for the treatment of pain, injury and dysfunction.

Niamh McGuirk

Niamh has 16 years’ experience in the fitness industry, delivering Personal Training, Group Fitness classes and further education on an international level. She travelled the world as a Les Mills Master Trainer and Presenter and has appeared on 2 Les Mills Bodypump DVDs being the first person to represent Ireland.

She lived in South Africa for 3 years where she launched the Les Mills programs and worked as the National Product Manager for Planet Fitness, a fast-growing gym chain with over 40 clubs around South Africa.

Niamh’s other love is music and she works as a professional singer when not in the gym. This love for music and the ability to entertain a crowd gives her the edge and ability to thrive as a Group Fitness instructor.

Laura Connick BSc

In addition to the National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training, Laura holds a BSc in Sports and Exercise Management from UCD and has worked in some of Dublin’s most established gyms.

Laura specialises in helping clients to achieve and maintain optimal body weight and ensures they achieve their goals in a healthy and sustainable fashion.

Laura is dedicated to continuing professional development and constantly expands her knowledge base and training to ensure she can provide the best advice to her clients.

Brighid Liston

Brighid is an energetic instructor with great knowledge of health and fitness who practices what she preaches.

Brighid is a keen runner, competing in the regular BHAA races. She is also a Pilates instructor and runs her own Sports Pilates Classes Cork at LesiureWorld and also teaches regular Aqua aerobics classes.

Ray Lynch BSc, MA

Since graduating with the National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training in 2001, Ray has worked in the health fitness industry with various gyms and corporate health facilities, such as Ulster Bank and University College Dublin, mainly facilitating group exercise classes, indoor cycling classes and personal training.

In 2002 Ray was awarded his honours degree in Health Services Management from the Dublin Institute of Technology and went on to complete a Masters in Management with the IPA/University College Dublin in 2006.

Craig Clifford

Craig completed the National Qualification in Exercise, Health Studies and Personal Training in 2011 and has also completed Kettlebells, Step Aerobics, Suspension Training and Strength and Conditioning advanced certification programmes with NTC.

Craig operates his own successful fitness facility and Personal Training business. He mainly tutors Resistance Training, Fitness Assessment and Exercise Principles.
